We recently visited Rome on the Ruby Princess and traveled to Rome by train from the port of Civitavecchia where the Ruby Princess docked. This was a lot easier and cheaper to do than you might think.

A free shuttle bus took us from the ship to the entrance to the port. We then turned right and walked down the street paralleling the Mediterranean Sea (Viale Giuseppe Garibaldi) until we got to the train station on the left side of the street. The station is actually located on Via Della Repubblica which closely parallels Viale Giuseppe Garibaldi.

Purchasing A BIRG Ticket
We purchased a BIRG ticket from the news stand inside of the railway station for 9 Euros. BIRG stands for Bigliatto Integrato Regionale Giorno and is an integrated regional daily ticket that is good for one day and can be used to ride on regional trains, buses and subways in Rome. If you want to buy a BIRG ticket don't get in the ticket line in the train station because they can't sell you a BIRG ticket.
Validating Your BIRG Ticket
Make sure you validate your ticket by inserting it in one of the yellow boxes located on the wall on the train platform before boarding the train. A time stamp will be printed on the ticket. Failure to validate your ticket can result in a fine plus the cost of the ticket if a conductor asks to see your ticket.
Civitavecchia To Roma S. Pietro (Vatican) Train Station
It takes approximately 1 1/2 hours to ride to the Roma Termini train station. However, if you plan to visit the Vatican you may want to start at the Vatican by getting off the train at the Roma S. Pietro station. It only takes from 45 minutes to 1 hour to get to the Roma S. Pietro station from Civitavecchia. Trains stop for only 2 minutes at the Roma S. Pietro station so be prepared to get off when you reach that stop.

It is a short walk to the Vatican from the train station. If you are visiting the Vatican be aware of the strict dress rules: no skirts above the knee, no shorts, no bare shoulders (i.e., tank tops or sleeveless blouses).
After visiting the Vatican we took a walking tour of the main attractions of Rome and ended up at the Coliseum. We took the Metro from the Coliseum to the main Roma Termini train station where we caught the regional train back to Civitavecchia. Check the monitors in the terminal for the times and departure tracks for the regional trains to Civitavecchia. Please note that it is a long walk to the tracks where the regional trains to Civitavecchia depart.
